Youth Outfield Drop-Step Fundamentals Drill

Classic youth coaching video teaching ready position, rocking motion, and decisive glove-side and throwing-side drop steps for fly balls and ground balls.

Equipment:
Ball only
Duration:
About 8 min
Setting:
Outdoor
Players:
Partner

Coaching notes

Players start in an upright athletic ready position with a slight rocking motion. Coach signals or hits; player executes a clean drop step to the glove side or throwing side, finds the ball, and gets underneath it. Emphasizes that a correct drop step makes the player one step quicker.

Objectives

Install a reliable ready position and first-step drop-step habit so young outfielders react correctly to balls over their heads or in either direction.

Coaching cues

Ready on the balls of the feet with a light rock; decisive drop step (outside foot plants and opens the hip); find the ball after the first step; get underneath it; same fundamentals both directions.

Common errors

False steps or delayed first move; dropping the wrong foot first; running with the glove already open (slows the player); heel striking instead of running on the toes.

Steps

  1. 1. Athletic ready position with light rock
  2. 2. Coach signals or hits; player drop-steps glove side and sprints
  3. 3. Repeat throwing-side drop step
  4. 4. Add actual fly balls or ground balls once the step is clean
  5. 5. Both directions, multiple reps
