Valle Fast-Slow-Fast Outfield Ground-Ball Approach Drill

Outfield ground-ball drill that trains the critical speed changes (fast to controlled to fast again) when charging a ball and preparing to throw.

Equipment:
Cones
Duration:
About 10 min

Coaching notes

Athlete approaches the ground ball at full speed, decelerates under control to field cleanly, then re-accelerates through the throw. Emphasizes rhythm and body control on do-or-die plays.

Objectives

Teach proper approach speed changes; improve fielding under control while maintaining momentum for the throw.

Coaching cues

Attack hard early; break down under control just before the ball; play through the ball and re-accelerate into the crow hop.

Common errors

Coming in too fast and bobbling; slowing too early and losing momentum; stopping completely after the catch.

Steps

  1. 1. Start in ready position
  2. 2. Sprint toward ground ball
  3. 3. Decelerate and field cleanly
  4. 4. Crow-hop and throw with momentum
