Rocker Drill

Core pitching mechanics drill emphasizing weight shift, glove-side lead and downhill-to-uphill shoulder action without a full delivery.

Skill:
mechanics weight transfer
Equipment:
Ball only
Duration:
About 8 min
Setting:
Outdoor
Players:
Solo

Coaching notes

Pitcher starts with feet ~2/3 height apart (back toe 3 o'clock, front 1 o'clock). Rocks weight into back leg while hands break, shoulders rise, then pulls glove side hard to initiate the forward move and finish through the target.

Objectives

Teach proper weight transfer, glove-side initiation, shoulder tilt and finish without the complexity or stress of a full wind-up.

Coaching cues

Go downhill then uphill with the shoulders; pull glove arm hard; finish chest toward target; feet wide enough for comfortable rock; front toe near 1 o'clock.

Common errors

Feet too close together (poor weight shift); early or late hand break; failing to use glove side; finishing upright instead of through the target.

Safety

No ball required initially; monitor arm path; ideal for warm-up or recovery days.

Setup

Open space or mound; optional mirror or partner target; towel or light ball optional.

Progressions

Dry rocker → add towel whip → light ball → full stretch or wind-up integration.

Variations

From stretch only; reverse for lefties; add pause at balance point.

Steps

  1. 1. Feet ~2/3 height apart, back toe 3 o'clock, front 1 o'clock, hands at chest
  2. 2. Sink downhill, break hands as weight shifts back, front leg straightens and toe rises
  3. 3. Shoulders rise; pull glove side hard to start forward motion
  4. 4. Turn back foot over, lean upper body toward target, tuck glove and finish
