Coaching notes
Coach acts as quarterback throwing fly balls and line drives over shoulders and straight back while outfielder practices drop-steps, routes at 45 degrees or straight, getting behind the ball, and working through toward the target. Progresses to misread throws behind the player requiring quick head/hip flips without slowing down.
Objectives
Improve first-step quickness, route efficiency, confidence going back on the ball, and ability to recover from misreads while maintaining speed.
Coaching cues
Get behind the ball and work through it toward home; eliminate false steps on the first move; maintain 45-degree angles on shoulder throws; flip head and hips quickly on misreads and never slow down; use cones to mark correct paths.
Common errors
False steps forward; slowing down when flipping hips; taking lazy shallow routes instead of deep angles; drifting instead of getting fully behind the ball.
Safety
Use soft toss or controlled throws; clear space behind outfielder; progress gradually from controlled to full-speed reps.
Setup
Open field or large gym space; 2-3 cones optional for path markers; coach with baseballs 15-20 yards in front of player.
Progressions
Start with known routes and easy flies; add line drives; introduce misreads last; increase throw difficulty and add throws after catch.
Variations
Indoor version with soft toss; competitive timing races; add crow-hop throws to a base after catch.
Steps
- 1. Player takes prep steps into ready position facing coach
- 2. Coach throws fly ball over right shoulder at 45°; player drop-steps, gets behind, works through to coach
- 3. Repeat with line drive over same shoulder
- 4. Switch to left shoulder sequence (fly then line drive)
- 5. Straight-back sequence both shoulders
- 6. Misread reps: player starts straight back, coach throws behind; player flips head/hips and runs through catch without slowing
