Outfield Fly Ball Diamond Drill
Four-cone diamond pattern trains drop-step, crossover, correct angles, and over-the-shoulder tracking for fly balls.
- Equipment:
- Cones
- Duration:
- About 10 min
- Setting:
- Outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Cones form a diamond (start cone, two 45-degree cones at ~30 ft, front cone at ~60 ft). Player tosses ball to partner, partner points to a cone. Player opens hips, drop-steps + crossover, sprints past the cone, looks over the correct shoulder, and catches the tossed ball.
Objectives
Master efficient first-step footwork and angles for balls over the head or in the gaps; improve tracking while running at speed.
Coaching cues
Open hips fully; drop step then crossover; look over the correct shoulder (right for right-side balls); sprint past the cone before locating; create an angle to the ball.
Common errors
False steps or incomplete hip open; looking too early; not sprinting past the cone; wrong shoulder look; rounding the path instead of creating angle.
Steps
- 1. Setup 4 cones in diamond pattern
- 2. Player at start tosses ball to partner
- 3. Partner points to a cone
- 4. Player opens hip, drop-steps + crossover toward cone
- 5. Sprint past cone, look over correct shoulder, catch tossed ball
